  2. Biographical Information
Shawkat was born in Mesan, south of Iraq in 1940. His interest in art piqued at an early age when a teenage friend suggested they spend one dreary afternoon drawing. It was at that moment that he discovered his lifework Shawkat began his art education at the Baghdad Academy of Art, where he studied in the classical immersed himself in applications of technique and design. After that, he began pursuing fine art; visiting museums to study master works and painting alongside contemporary artists. Shawkat found his passion in painting from life. This direct approach to working with the figure and landscape allowed him to see and attempt to capture the infinite nuances of light, color, and form. This continues to drive his enthusiasm today. Since then he has been featured in solo and group shows across the country and has won several awards at prominent national invitational exhibitions and his work has been collected both nationally and internationally.
The artist’s skillful and technically adept work celebrates the created world, the human form, personal relationships with a connection to landscapes and environments of special importance. Many of his figures are dressed in dramatic clothing which he often invents for its aesthetic appeal and lyrical quality so as to achieve a sense of other worldliness.. His subjects evoke a timelessness and idealism, yet for the most part has drawn upon his home and community, including family and friends, for subject matter. His sense of intimacy and honesty with regard to his subjects are a direct result of his closeness and proximity to them. A projection of tranquility, repose and rich introspection result from his knowledge of the content of his art.
In the commonplace, he is transformed into a higher reality and consequently a sense of greater importance. Emotions are a vital part of his express design, while his mastery of anatomy, the human form and complex surfaces combine to make his canvases very powerful visual experiences.
Shawkat has established himself as an important Iraqi painter among the leading talents of our time. About his work he has said, " My goal is to effectively record the richness of our human experience, the contrasts between life and death, the dance and dirge, the beautiful and common, joy and sorrow, hope and despair, while in the end, offering a message of hope and pointing the viewer to the eternal." and " As I paint my subjects from life and have the privilege of studying the awe inspiring breadth and depth of the beauty of the created world

    Biographical Information

Excerpt from the Biography of "SHAWKAT ALRUBAIE .

In the early (Mid) twentieth century in Iraq, was a new movement in modern Arts by artistic activity and creativity by a free association with and increased exposure to current European artistic styles, simply follow Europe's lead; now they initiated new and exciting artistic experiments which would ultimately change the face and the direction of modern art.
The culmination of this period's developments can be found in the idea of abstract, non-objective (non-representational) art. Finding perhaps the most definitive expression in Iraqi Suprematist works, abstract art developed through a series of artistic experiments, which, though usually short-lived, were crucial to its genesis. These experiments (movements) included Neo-primitivism, Cubism, Cubo-futurism, Suprematism, and Constructivism. Some of the most important representatives of these movements were. Among the other artists, more difficult to classify or to "compartmentalize," were Jawad Salim , Faiq Hassen, Atta Sabry , Hafid Aldrouby, , Issa hanna, Dr. KHaled Aljader, Faraj Abbo, Jamil Hammoudy. Ismail Alshaikly, Nazar Salim, Shaker Hassen Saied they stood apart from the rest not so much because of the essential direction of their works as because of their methods and particular sources of inspiration. Embodied in the rise and fall of these artistic currents, "the idea of renewal of art as a socially active force" remained strong for the artists of Iraq. avant-garde.
After the ( I.W.2 war), , many artists (chose) to emigrate to the West stiles. Others simply stayed abroad),Artists were relatively free to experiment, to establish their own unique styles and to join one of a great number of art groups and organizations. However, by 1931, this initial support for the arts was no longer necessary. Now it was time to (start), The first steps of the Artist, writers established the doctrine of realism (applicable to all the arts).
"SHAWKAT ALRUBAIE is unquestionably one of greatest artist in Iraq . His reputation and unparalleled accomplishments have undergone a libelous, dishonest, relentless and systematic assault of immense proportions,& as we shall know, & see, he painted the Iraqi peasant men & women, and was arguably one of the goodies painter of the human figure in the south of Iraq. His figures come to life, like no previous artist in his homeland Iraq, has ever before achieved. He’s one of the best in painting human anatomy, more importantly he wrote many books about Arts. ٍ
SHAWKAT caught the very souls and spirits of his subjects much like his masters Faiq Hassan, Jawad Salim, ismaiel al shaikgy, Naziha Salim. He captured the soul of youth over present time & feature.

Considering his consummate level of skill and craft, and the fact that the great preponderance of his works are life-Art, it is one of the finest work ever produced by any Iraqi artist. Add to that the fact that fully half of these paintings are great masterpieces, and The museum Of modern Art In Iraq have the picture of an artist who belongs like his Iraqi masters, in the top ranks of only a handful of masters in the entire history of eastern art.

  4. Few Arabs today can match the indefatigable energies that glow from the creative works of Shawkat Al-Rubai'e.
Indeed, one is struck not only by his imaginative paintings and sketches but also by his succinct writing and critical analyses on contemporary Iraqi and Arab art. These energies reveal the complexities as well as the anxieties of his world. His paintings show an unmistakable yearning for, and even an obsession with, his childhood world –the cruel but beautiful marches of southern Iraq. It was here where one of the earliest civilizations in mankind; Sumer, was formed. Within this unique natural world of water, reeds and abundant animal life, man toiled tirelessly under the scorching sun to sustain his basic existence. This wondrous and fantastic world, therefore, became the artist's existential canvas and metaphoric framework, providing him vast and inexhaustible panoply of joyful as well as sad memories that are essential for his visual expression. Mythical symbols of Mesopotamia, natural elements, and social milieu, are his tools of declaration. Human figures, often sad and voluptuous marsh women became synonymous with his painting. One cannot help but admire the way in which Al-Rubai'e tried to confront his complex and enigmatic art with powerful imagery of forms and colors.
His incessant reference to his place and social geography gives him a unique artistic vitally that is rare among artists today. Perhaps, one way to fathom his ethos is to read his fascinating biographical book.

  6. WINGS AND ROOTS
AN ADVENTURE IN ART, LITERATURE AND LIFE

    Preface

The texts of these diaries, have written over four decades according to a curriculum
and objective mode. The daily events had affected on the texts so I had to add and make margins and annotations. That addition pressed on the movement of the structure and its shape to let the texts introduce themselves widely and freely to express their existence and its horizons that will not vanish between the artist and the world around him and aesthetic means of the expression, from the word to the color to the architecture vocabulary of whole life. Perhaps I feel that this achievement presents a part of the literary and artistic stages that their ideas have been disseminated by other creators; poets, novelists, musicians, art and literature critics and geniuses of the Sociology, Science and Education, who supplied me with a lot of their creativity treasures and helped to pass a distance of this long travel.
I often toured in their worlds in my imagination supporting by the influence of the letter and color to stand firmly for defense of human existence and the freedom which is offended, marginalized and plundered by organized wars that destroy the beauty, history, science, culture and future of humanity. Those wars trying to convince us that our misery is a continuation of what had happened before to people in our moral and political history who lived in exile with the alienation and all of them were Iraqis, from the Prophet Abraham, who left his country” Ur “Iraq, to the poet Mutanabbi, Abn Zreik Baghdadi, Abu Ali kali and Zriab, and those who emigrated with and after him of Arab Muslim poets, scientists and philosophers toward Andalusia, Morocco and Egypt and then waves of thousands of creative men and millions of exiled people who are now strangers scattered on the earth. The exile and alienation unite them. There is nothing but freedom can shake human spirit in relations of the social system. After the progress of human spirit created the nations, after all the people involved in some way at the same advantages, what can the human race do without a sense of freedom?!

  7. Shawkat Alrubaie saThe oil paintings which I have done, the sketches I have made and the letters I have
written in Arabic, Islamic, international, humanitarian alphabet are achieved with the obsession called “Hope”. Also this book in your hands, has been constructed by illusion of imagined wishes which made me had strength and weakness, determination and with their contradictions, allegation of pride, highness and arrogance against deception and defeatism. In a world topped by chaos, violence, wars, destruction, greed, deceit and egoism, a world in which the principles of intellectual fairness are hidden, there is also what we have invented to justify our fears from the unknown, and that is the hope, the only symbol that does not lose its shine in hearts of weak people and does not lose its eminent status to face the world events that threaten us with extinction and menace to the life on our blue planet. From here, you find us tenacious of edges of leaving hope cloud, so I have to write in a language that floods with a noble passion and astonishing fondness. For the love springs overflow on the threshing floors of wheat, bunches of date palms, mountains peaks, valleys, deserts, marshes waters and the plains of Arab world.
At the first time I sensed my freedom, noticed that my sorrow has vanished, and its ashes turned to light so I was able to paint and write the postponed pages in the book of wishes. I wrote memoirs, short stories, novels and thirty books about tracks of art history, literature and art criticism.
The only thing I deal with in this book is the story of freedom in art, culture and life… There are wishes in life make us suffer for and work to attain them whatever the distance and cost are.

  8. RUAIE AS SEEN BY ARAB INTELLECTUALS
    (1)

Rubaie and detection of the human meaning

    Shakir Hassan AL Saeid
    Painter and critic (1926-2004)

“Painter and writer Shawkat Rubai’e since the beginning of the sixties, has the general intrinsic lines of an artistic vision lines derived from his own personal life secrets, which he was able to follow it through himself and reflected in a work of art, perhaps he tried to reflect the relation between his art and writings with the social civilization which he belong to. And we would see that fact, as we saw earlier, driven by extreme enthusiasm for the recovery his (basic elements). He stood at conception of the imagined and material of the world, and that is a human reflection of anguish of a man who could not leave his belonging to the mother which is, culturally, the material surroundings. From here, we notice his interesting in painting certain units such as small boats and reed.
“Those cultural justifications were perhaps behind our interpretation to what Shawkat enduring in childhood. Now he seems to live freely abandoning the principle of domination over the world, to stay under his abstract objectivity… But the matter in his cultural attitude does not stop at this point, for his technique and style depend on one color in the painting and that is green), what is the benefit of that for him? Is it symbol of marshes and orchards? Or the green color has its spiritual holiness in the artist’s childhood.”
“Whatever the artist Shawkat Rubaie, wanted to search for suffering human, frustrating human, besieged human, underdog rights, and that is only to discover his personality in such research. On the other hand, his diagnostic themes (mostly on women and life in the marshes of Iraq), remain high in discovery of the human meaning.”
“the specificity of “Rubai’e experience” is in his excessive love of ideas and subjects, whether in painting or writing, explaining the secret of his interest in perspective view and mass and blue, green, orange and turquoise colors, in the areas of graphic construction, , in order to find balance and harmony . He has been focusing on the strength of construction, because he believed that the organization is continuity of sense and intelligence. He says: (I focus on the structure and architecture of the artwork for purely organizational purpose, coordination my feeling and searching for a style suits me, and that has helped me to accomplish my paintings which graphics have become dominated in my memory. That sequences my feelings, and I worked through that to find height of the desired).”

  9. A creative adventure

    Jabra Ibrahim Jabra
    Writer, painter, critic and novelist
(Born in Palestine 1921-died in Baghdad 1994)

Among artist, there is one who looks carefully and gives us a detailed (real) picture of what he sees. And there is another one looks and then gives us his visual impression to let us share his impression, and there is one who gives us his mental reaction or emotional reaction of what he or she sees. But there is one who surpasses all that toward what is more deeper and comprehensive, because this artist combines his visual experience, mental and emotional all together, all what eyes sees, what hand touches and what senses have known and becomes a part of the memory.
Such artist belongs to special tribe and Shawkat Rubaie from that. Therefore, artist like him has drawn one hundred painting linking each other; it is not unusual for him now and in future to do that.

But that remains itself a stunning thing because the fragments of the internal explosions are thrown in every direction, and the painting is only one fragment of that lava to come toward us hot and full of symbols of its source. I saw the beginning of one of those internal explosions when I was with Shawkat Rubaie visiting Moscow and Leningrad in November and December 1978.
At night, Shawkat put his colors on the bed and began painting on the wall of his room until the next morning when felt tired and slept.
I awakened him then he saw view of dim faces waiting an explanation to one of the painting’s internal explosions with its sad symbols as he was living in an endless amazing dream leaving that agitated fire which I felt its heat and its glow in that icy trip when we breathed air of forty-five degrees below zero. For that dream, Shawkat turned into a material time on the wall of a room in “Astoria” Hotel in Leningrad.
The escort woman came to me saying that we had caused embarrassment for them in the hotel because the cleaner discovered that Shawkat room’s wall was (stained) with mystical oil paintings and informed the management of the hotel, which sent somebody to examine the wall, and Shawkat had to pay 100 Rubles to compensate for damage. I immediately realized what had happened. Shawkat, for emotions and memories overlapped in himself, could not sleep only when he allowed himself to make the wall of his bedroom a painting (he did not have paper or canvas at that time) to record some of his internal explosions, and when he finished that in the morning, he could sleep for two or three hours, but when he got up and looked at wall, he called that painting “siege of Leningrad”. He did not surprise and feel that he has done something to blame for. But I told the escort, half joked: “officials of the hotel have to boast that Arab artist left in his room a big real work art, and they must raise the price of that room.”
While the artist had to pay one hundred rubles as price of a (creative adventure), he added expressional experiment to keep its plunging as we have seen in his last paintings and exhibitions. This is part of the discovery of some of accumulated lays in the latency stage, and it emerged by mental explosion, or by projection embodied in sharp brush strikes and strong color. Shawkat’s paintings are like poetical sequence, the watcher needs to see all of them to collect the meaning, but every one of his paintings is a poem in itself. The artist here
Here artist explores a past full with color and movement, event and passion. His works are mostly the experience of the Iraqi marshes and historic symbols with its psychological, societal complexities, its light and dark, cruelty and wonderment, life and death and its assurances on the human as a body disintegrates by work and flushes by love and sadness.

  10. Rubaie planted soft green grass in the garden of art

    Professor Mahood Ahmad
(Painter, born in 1940 in Amara)

“…The social subjects and landscapes, situations and emotions which Shawkat Rubaie tried to move to his experience, do not seem on the surface of the painting just a reflection of the environment richness, but the pressure of artistic culture on units of the complex subject showed the diversity of intellectual data in (content), not the subject alone, and that crystallized in the diversity of social and political issues that have enriched the past experience. He was careful researcher who did not try to concentrate too much on reality, but described the conditions and events and circumstances which his homeland and nation and society have passed as errors of politicians. He had reread the events after scrutiny, and he had expected after inspecting, and then he began painting: firstly he did a series of studies by water colors and different materials, and then painted in oil on canvas considering that as a (study) too. This practice has given him an ability to express his emotions and very sensitive spirit responding strongly to his visions. The painter, who could load his latest works with new mode of expression, by warm exciting colors with mythological, historical and popular elements, is able to create new experiment.
“In the two wars in Iraq; Iraq-Iran War (1980-1988) and Gulf War (1991), he had painted all day and written profusely at dawn. He was painting, sketching, designing reading and writing. He did not know what fate waiting him, despite all that, he continued to paint and read and write. The process of painting was an attitude and continuity with life, for this it is difficult to assess or estimate the creative artwork in isolation from the attitude towards the changing life. This made the experience has been accomplished in his paintings to provoking and pointing deeply to contradictions, because the artist finds in his artwork the face of invisible truth, the face of reality which is full of variables and opposites.. The artist sees the light.
Rubaie is a creator for establishing distinct critical principles in Iraq, and he is an excellent painter. It could also discuss the hidden meaning in these forms of human creativity, and that requires accurate pursuance and brilliant interlocutor. The critic’s personality in the painter is a mediator between them, and the responsibility on the recipient, artist and critic, and that would not be done only by completing the elements of communication between after further study and looking for the real attitude.
“His experiment and paintings and writings have become one of fronts of contemporary Iraqi art, for they possess the integrated elements of the form.
Rubaie latest exhibitions in Europe and the Arab world take us to the warmth and sincerity of the amazing exhibitions in the fifth and sixth decades of this century, and excite us by its artistic potential and rich themes close to thought and conscience that we missed by the tyranny of pure formal styles that rely on (technique) only without content, which we need in contemporary Arab art. His experience has given new blood and planted soft green grass in the garden of art. Greeting to the clarity of the mirror of his experience which we have attracted affinity to his painting. Greeting to his patience to make art a messenger of peace and love.”

  12. THE ARTIST OF THE PEOPLE
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The creative impulse of SHAWKAT has been unleashed and volcanically erupted into wide areas of green and blue that dominate most of his paintings. His artistic zealous is so great that no sooner does he stand in front of his easel, than his hands guide the brush to reflect the vision within his mind. This maybe the force behind SHAWKAT's stunning productivity.
Further, his paintings clearly show that SHAWKAT's memory is teeming with images from his own social past. He is also highly motivated by an ardent curiosity to plunge deep into the mysteries of the artistic experience, to the very fringes of it. SHAWKAT's abstract paintings, in particular indicate that he is very much aware of how to work out the matrix of his paintings. The artistic ingredients are delicately balanced. The inner-relations of colors are harmoniously turned in order to express the painting's subject. His aesthetic values are gradually establishing themselves to accord him a distinct place in Iraq's modern art.
It is not surprising that SHAWKAT highly cherishes the colors of blue and green. They are integrally related to his local color. His early residence was in the marshes, a place which is swept with water and greenery. The mix of particular color and general images works toward the objective of encompassing and canvassing his exclusive ideas, as well as the spontaneity and steadfastness of his fellow men.
That he harps on the fury and indignation of people against alien powers brings the viewer's mind to the great feats of brave people in all times and places. This fact has awarded him the name: THE ARTIST OF THE PEOPLE. He has his own position within modern Iraqi art.

  15. Shawkat Alrubaie ... Jul 2, 2013 "I wasn't lucky enough to do what I wanted to do abroad in Europe. After ware, I wasn't able to travel, perform and come back.. The Iraqi government refused to let me get out of the country. Before that, they were proud to stamp my passport and send me out because they knew that when I went abroad, I took something from Iraq to that country where I was going. Something like Arts. Something like novel !
Shawkat Alrubaie ... Jul 2, 2013 The Shawkat painting process delivers a fine stream of resulting in vivid, pure color and exceptional detail that is suitable for museum or gallery display. This high-stile art is expertly produced to capture the vivid color and exceptional detail of the original. His art was created using a sophisticated digital printer.
Shawkat Alrubaie ... Jul 2, 2013 "Not only did [his work] serve what should be an essential function of criticism, that of introducing readers to new work, bizarre work, things they wouldn’t ordinarily encounter . . . it did so in a notably un-amazing manner. Thoroughly trained in literature and Critics, SHAWKAT ALRUBAIE applied the standards of the past -- truth, beauty, transcendence, spirituality -- to the new art of the sixties, with its alienation, extremity, perversity. .
Shawkat Alrubaie ... Jul 2, 2013 The truth disappeared. The culture has become closed,”. “New inventions are everywhere. The people loved it and have become servants for it without consciousness. The truth sank in the sea of indifference.” He added: “people feared from power, so they decided to eschew. This painting is about War. 1980 by Shawkat Alrubaie
Shawkat Alrubaie ... Jul 2, 2013 All of us knew poverty and sorrows, though we did not realize but they lived in us. We were happy that new one joined us; Abdulridha hafedh whose dream was becoming a player in the top team of Iraq. (8)
Shawkat Alrubaie ... Jul 2, 2013 There are hopes in life make us suffer for and work to achieve them until the end.- 1967- Amarah - south of Iraq.
Shawkat Alrubaie ... Jul 2, 2013 It seems to me that with the development of the critical spirit we shall be able to realize, not merely our own selves, but the collective life of the race, and so to make ourselves absolutely modern, in the true meaning of the word modernity.. . . . To know anything about oneself one must know all about others. There must be no mood with which one cannot sympathize, no dead mode of life that one cannot make alive."
Shawkat Alrubaie ...

Seine Exzellenz der Kaiser.. Seien Sie wie Shawkat Al Rubaie

    Dichter: Yahia Al Samawi

  33. Shawkat Alrubaie, His Art & Life
SHAWKAT ALRUBAIE Was born in, Amarah City, south of Iraq, in March 14, 1940, grew up in it, and attended high school in Amrah. He received his B.A. from the Institute of Fine Arts of Baghdad, in Iraq, and did graduation project in "Arts philosophy, literature, and theology of Arts" at Baghdad University.
His books, published by Ministry of culture, Baghdad, Cairo, Sharja, Abodabi, siyrya, includes his Auto Biography, The sorrows of reeds, The Book Of Hope, The Privet Life Of Arts Lover, The Shawkat Alrubaie Story, and Contemporary Art In Arabian Countries; a collection of Art Critics, including Arts in Iraq.
His essays have appeared in The Iraqi & Arabian News papers, The magazines Review of Books, The Times Literary Supplement, Art in Iraq, Review, The Nation, , and many other magazines inside Iraq and abroad. "The Modern Arts in Oman", "Arts We Know Now" (1958; up to date; in The Best Arabian Arts of the Century) published by ALROYA house in Oman.
Awarded "The Iraqi National writers & Artist's Award". And was a member of "the National Book Critics committee".
SHAWKAT ALRUBAIE is a powerful thinker, as smart as he is supposed to be, and a better Painter & writer, than anyone else who now wears the tag 'intellectual.' "We wouldn’t recognize our postwar intellectual history without SHAWKAT ALRUBAIE."
"Not only did [his work] serve what should be an essential function of criticism, that of introducing readers to new work, bizarre work, things they wouldn’t ordinarily encounter . . . it did so in a notably un-amazing manner. Thoroughly trained in literature and Critics, SHAWKAT ALRUBAIE applied the standards of the past -- truth, beauty, transcendence, spirituality -- to the new art of the sixties, with its alienation, extremity, perversity. . . . And the writing was marvelous -- high-toned, but full of zest and the pleasure of performing."

  34. "[ SHAWKAT ALRUBAIE] has a footprint in the plant of purity, and another footprint in hedonism and popular culture . . . Anchoring all his enthusiasms and gaieties and eccentricities is a very strong moral sense, which is expressed in that most admirable and rare quality -- physical and intellectual courage. He is brave."
"[ SHAWKAT ALRUBAIE] is one of our very few brand-name intellectuals. . . . The bearer of the standard of high seriousness in a culture that has essentially capitulated to the easy lifting of the ironic mode or the ready clasp of pure entertainment."
"Where the Stress Falls raises the bar of criticism to the highest level . . ."[SHAWKAT ALRUBAIE]'s idea of a writer is ‘someone interested in everything,’ someone who ‘travels everywhere.’ His energy infuses every word in the collection."
"With its captivating range of subjects, Where the S0r0ws of Reeds is an unrivaled guide to what to read."
"On each of these essays, one could write an essay . . . the cumulative effect of his writing is to stimulate the flow of argument . . . you might say that he has diverted the mainstream; his private islands of thought now look like the world on which we've always lived. His very success has moved him from the margin to the center. . . . What ultimately matters about "[ SHAWKAT ALRUBAIE] . . . is what he has defended: the life of the mind, and the necessity for reading and writing as 'a way of being fully human.' . . . He persuades us . . . that suffering must be analyzed, not indulged, and that the most personal of misfortunes can be put to work in making sense of the human condition. He stands for what is articulate, independent, and exploratory: for self as a work in progress."
What is wonderful about" The book of Hope" is the counterpoint of novelist and essayist, of innocence and knowingness. From the knowingness comes another excellence of In Iraq, its "cat's cradle" of all meanings.
"The book of Hope" is an exhilarating journey into the past, freighted with dazzling detail, the product of an endlessly inquisitive, historical imagination.
"The book of Hope" Often brave and beautiful, occasionally arch and irritating, "[ SHAWKAT ALRUBAIE] 's twentieth book is an epic riff of imagination on little-known historical events. The scope of the tale is vast, and there is largesse in the telling, the sheer happiness of art.
"The book of Hope" is a tour force... a magical accomplishment by an alchemist of ideas and words, images and truth."
"Almost but not quite as lively as in "The book of Hope", Shawkat's prose there is lithe, playful."
